Description
CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN AMERICAN ARMORIAL CUP, polychrome hand-painted decorations featuring an escutcheon with images of indigenous figures including one with bow and arrow and an indigenous figure above also with bow and arrow, printed "ANTHONY / DE / MOOR" to ribbon below, having border including cornucopias flanking a caduceus below rim. Qianlong period, 1736-1795. 2 5/8" HOA.
Catalogue Note: Numerous settlers with the last name Moor/Moore settled within the borders of Virginia and the other colonies during the 18th century. Many of these figures would possibly have had contact or relationships with the indigenous people of the area, especially in the western lands of Virginia. A search on Ancestry resulted in the discovery of numerous Anthony Moor(e)s living within the state including the counties of Hampshire and Warren, each located on the western fringes of 18th century Virginia. Further research will be needed to determine possible familial connections.

The important collection of H. Marshall Goodman Jr., Richmond, VA.
