Description
Chinese School, Qing Dynasty, 19th century.
Japanese coral and wooden stand.
Measurements: 17 x 21 x 9 cm.
Round sculpture entirely carved in coral, in a single piece, standing on a wooden base, also delicately carved. As is usual in carvings from this period, the details of the clothing, the bearded face and the utensils that identify the figure have been carefully reproduced. It is likely that the figure depicted is Fukurokuju, a deity of Chinese origin that Japanese Buddhism would later incorporate into its pantheon of gods of fortune. The god of wisdom and longevity, he carries a hermit's gourd and wears a draped robe.
