Description
Chinese Embroidered Silk Robe, probably 19th century in date, is an exquisite example of imperial-style robes created in workshops for members of the court. The butterflies and peony motifs suggest that it was created for a lady at court. The decorative program--cosmic sea and mountains on the lower half with butterflies and peonies-- are intricately embroidered with varying techniques including the forbidden stich (needle-loop embroidery). The butterflies are created from gold thread and placed on the front, back, sides, shoulders and sleeves. Auspicious symbols, also embroidered in gold thread, encircle the sleeves.
