Japanese Woven Bamboo Basket, signed Bijusai, with inscribed signature to the underside, c.1850. In the form of Daitoku's Purse, originally designed for flower arrangements, takes its shape from Daitoku's bag that is generally filled with valuables. Daitoku is one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese Mythology, and is the patron of commerce and prosperity. The bamboo is shaped at the rim to resemble the undulating fabric tied at the neck with a drawstring. Extremely flexible, the strips of bamboo are woven in an openwork pattern.and fashioned to resemble the tying cord. The openwork pattern makes the interior bamboo flower container visible and gives an airy effect to the basket. It comes with a wooden tomobako with inscriptions on the lid.
