Description
Two Japanese Nabeshima Blue and White Porcelain Bowls, Edo period, Tenpo period (1830-1844) c. 1830 in date, represent the high quality porcelain made for the Nabeshima clan during the Edo Period (1615-1868). Made for official gifts or use by the Nabeshima clan, the porcelains were not exported until the Meiji Period. The tall foot rims decorated with painted comb designs are distinctive characteristics of the porcelains and recall those on lacquer ware dishes. These dishes are decorated with an old pine tree and a peony emerging from rockwork painted in underglaze cobalt blue. Details like the pine cones and buds contrast with the abstract patterns of the pine bark and rocks. Nabeshima porcelains are known for their extraordinary artistry.
