Description
James Hamilton (American, 1819-1878) Arctic explorations watercolor "Shipwrecked on an Iceberg", original watercolor illustration created for the title page of "Arctic Exploration in the Years 1853, '54, '55" by Elisha Kent Kane. Hamilton created watercolor paintings based on Kane's sketches from the Grinnell Expedition, which were then engraved by J. McGoffin for publication in Arctic Explorations. Hamilton sold off all of his paintings in Philadelphia in 1875 to finance a trip around the world, but unfortunately passed away two years later; watercolor on paper, signed "Hamilton", inscribed on reverse "Ship in the ice, Arctic Ocean, sketch by "J. Hamilton, presented to Dr.(?) by Mr. Bartis P. Newnam" and "this sketch was prepared for, and an engraving was made from it for Dr. Kane's book on his Arctic exploring expedition, and I think adorns its title page, A. W.(?)", 2-3/4" x 4-1/4" sheet, framed 5-1/4" sheet, framed 5-1/4" x 7", good condition, toning around edges
