Item Details
Description
Circa 1140-1150 AD, irregular South Western Angevin issue; reverse as Henry I (BMC type XV). Obv: profile bust right with tall crown fleurs and sceptre before and +HE[NRICV]S REX legend. Rev: cross fleury over quadrilateral with +[ ]RE:ON:[ ]RIST: legend with N and S reversed for an uncertain moneyer at Cirencester? mint. S. 1327; N. 940; Mack type 247-249; see EMC 2010.0271 (this coin). 1.04 grams. Found Tibberton, Gloucestershire, UK, 2010; recorded with Early Medieval Corpus. This is an extremely interesting coin with the closest comparison being Mack 250 (North 940/1), with the reverse (of the same design as seen on the last issue of Henry I) reading +[ ]LEMON:CRST and which has been attributed to a mint in Cirencester. The reverse reading here is +[ ]RE:ON:[ ]RIST:, with a probable attribution to the same mint but for an uncertain moneyer, although another coin in this group has a reverse reading [+ ]ELFRE[ ]; the issue has been attributed to Henry of Anjou, son of Matilda and the future king Henry II.
Condition
Better than fine for the period, a little off centre, some flatness in legends and a scuff to obverse. Excessively rare (unique?); dies not apparently recorded previously.
