Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, ca. late 20th century CE. A hand carved, painted, and richly adorned wood kachina doll with a eagle head crest, quail feathers, cowrie shells, cloth, and yarn garments. This is Sipikni (Salimopaiyakya) originally a Zuni warrior kachina also used by Hopi people - he comes in a variety of colors and usually has a long snout, and evergreen anklets. Sipikni performs in Night and Bean Dances, and he might also help with crowd control and guard other kachinas from people approaching. The bottom of the foot is signed "Maxwell N." Size: 5" L x 2.5" W x 10.5" H (12.7 cm x 6.4 cm x 26.7 cm)
