Limited Edition Movado & Yaacov Agam Clock (1989)
Limited Edition Movado & Yaacov Agam Clock (1989)
Item Details
Description
Yaacov Agam (Israeli, b. 1928). Clock from Movado Love Star Collection, Number 153 of 250, 1989. Signed "Agam" on the gilt brass pyramidal stand. "Movado Watch Co. 153/250" and Agam label on verso of timepiece. Case No. 87.10.802. The Israeli artist Yaacov Agam created the design of this limited edition clock for Movado in the late 1980s. Agam is known for his abstract kinetic designs as demonstrated on this clock from the set entitled "Love Star". The clock demonstrates Agaam's colorful imagination with its black metal and polychrome presentation. The dials are comprised of multi-colored triangular shaped hands positioned over a background of overlapping multi-colored triangles that create a rainbow-colored star motif, and the two triangular hands configure to create a Star of David. Size: 6.625" in diameter (16.8 cm); 7.875" H (20 cm) on included custom stand.

Yaacov Agam studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and also studied with Johannes Itten, a revered Bauhaus color theoretician. Raised in an Orthodox Jewish home, Agam was discouraged from pursuing art by his father who was a rabbi, and rather than defy the Orthodox prohibition of graven, idolic images, Agam elected to create non-objective, non-representational works that prompt the viewer to contemplate and interpret. Agam's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Jewish Museum in New York City, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City where he was honored with a retrospective in 1980. In addition, the Yaacov Agam Museum of Art opened in September of 2016 in Rishon LeZion, Israel.

All is surrounded by a border of running black alternating with multicolored triangles, and the clock is mounted upon an Agam signed brass base. A must have for any collector of Yaacov Agaam art and/or Movado timepieces.

Provenance: private Goldstein collection, Denver, Colorado, USA. The Goldstein's have amassed their collection over the past six decades.
