Description
**First Time At Auction**

Latin America, Spanish Colonial period, ca. 19th century CE. A marvelous and quite massive wood relief of Santiago Matamoros, also known as Saint James the Great or Santiago the Moor Slayer, depicted on horseback as he triumphantly tramples 3 slain Moors below. The Moor Slayer raises a flag with a cross finial as his bearded head projects outwards, as though gazing down at his enemies. This figure is based on a prototype found in European paintings of Santiago Matamoros - triumphant upon a white horse, dressed in lavish vestments, wielding an intimidating sword and trampling over many severed heads of Moors. Similar iconography also constitutes the central section of a 7 panel altarpiece in the Chapel of the Alcazar of Segovia. The iconography of James Matamoros was used in the Spanish colonization of the Americas as a rival force to the indigenous gods, and protector of Spaniards from the indigenous peoples of the Americas. A hub on the verso of this example shows that it previously served as a wheel. Size: 35" L x 4" W x 36" H (88.9 cm x 10.2 cm x 91.4 cm)

Santiago Matamoros was one of Christ's disciples who is believed to have founded the Christian church in Spain. In addition, a myth of the Middle Ages describes how years after his death, Santiago Matamoros miraculously resurfaced in the battle of Clavijo in 844. During this battle, he assisted the Christian King Ramiro I of Asturias in his victory over the Moors who ruled Spain between 711 and 1492.
