Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Pre-Columbian, Mexico and Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A large, wide cylinder vessel made from pottery. The body is just slightly corsetted, standing on a convex base made to be sunk into soil rather than placed on a flat surface. The rim is unpronounced and the interior smooth. The exterior sides are incised with repeated motifs depicting what look like stairs with a spiral rising from the bottom step. Perhaps this motif denotes the steps to the tomb, as in the Maya world, as elsewhere in Mesoamerica, being iconographically below stairs represents death. Size: 7.1" W x 5.7" H (18 cm x 14.5 cm)
Provenance: collection of the late Alfred E. Stendahl, Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired prior to 1990
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
