Description
C. von Fascini (Italian, 19th C). "Barnyard Chores by the Mistress". Oil on canvas. 10" x 14" in 19th century gilded ornate frame: 18" x 22". This pastoral scene by C. von Fascini depicts the farmer’s wife making sure the water trough for the sheep is filled as they meander around the barn. The listed artist C. von Fascini (Italian, 19th Century) appears in several US auction sales and was handled by the Pittsburgh gallery J.J. Gillespie Gallery in the 1940’s. J.J. Gillespie is America’s oldest fine arts gallery entering its third century, and was established in 1832 showcasing old masters, Barbizon, and English and American paintings. This work is very typical of C. von Fascini, who painted mainly barn scenes with sheep and roosters/chickens. The subject matter is endearing and the quality is excellent. Very fine detail emulating the appreciation of livestock that Rosa Bonheur popularized in France. The painting was beloved by a private family for two generations.
