Item Details
Description
"Tarzan and the Ant Men" by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Grosset & Dunlap, reprinted from the original plates of McLurg's first edition with McClurg's 1st printing statement "Published September, 1924" without any other printings mentioned [This was not a pirated edition, the reuse of the original plates was a part of the agreement]. This printing was issued in 1934-35 with 17 Tarzan titles in the G & D add at the end of the book which are listed in order of publication with "Tarzan and the Lion Man" being the last (1934).

Hard boards, original red cloth with black lettering on spine and front board [a little wear], 5" x 7.1/2"; ink-written "Kenyon B. De Juene" on the front endpaper; no illustrations, 346 pages + G&D adds, a few stains, very good condition.

Tarzan and the Ant Men is the tenth novel in Burroughs' series of twenty-four books about the jungle hero Tarzan. It was first published as a seven-part serial in the magazine Argosy All-Story Weekly for February 2, 9, 16 and 23 and March 1, 8 and 15, 1924. It was first published in book form in hardcover by A. C. McClurg in September 1924.

In the book Master of Adventure: The Worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Richard A. Lupoff places Tarzan and the Ant Men in his list of essential Burroughs novels and states that it represents Burroughs at the peak of his creative powers. Tarzan and the Ant Men marks the end of a sequence that began with Tarzan the Untamed and continued through Tarzan the Terrible and Tarzan and the Golden Lion in which Burroughs' imagination and storytelling abilities presumably hit their peak, and which is generally considered a highlight of the series.
