Description
"Tarzan of the Apes" by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Grosset & Dunlap, 1920s, reprinted from the original plates of McLurg's first edition with McClurg copyright and McClurg's 1st printing statement "Published June, 1914." [This was not a pirated edition, the reuse of original plates was a part of the agreement].
Hard boards, original red cloth with black lettering on spine and front board, 5" x 7.1/2"; ink-written "Kenyon B. De Juene" on the front endpaper; frontispiece on glossy paper, 392 pages, a few stains- mostly the vertical outer edge of the pages [see photos]; very good condition.
"Tarzan of the Apes" is the first in the Tarzan series. It was first serialized in the pulp magazine The All-Story beginning October 1912 before being released as a novel in June 1914. T he story follows the title character Tarzan's adventures, from his childhood being raised by apes in the jungle to his eventual encounters with other humans and Western society. So popular was the character that Burroughs continued the series into the 1940s with two dozen sequels.
