Description
This stunning pocket watch chain was handmade around the 1920s, likely in Germany. It features alternating gilt and striped Niello elements. Even the clasps are decorated with Niello. Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. It hardens and blackens when cool, and the Niello on the flat surface is polished off to show the filled lines in black, contrasting with the polished silver around it. Overall, the piece is in very good condition considering its age and the wear it must have seen. Minor wear to the gilding and Niello. The chain is very well made and features a spring ring and a lobster clasp. This stylish piece measures approx. 10" long (chain) and weighs ca. 16.3 grams. Stamped "800" for a common European silver standard of 80% silver and carrying an unidentified designer mark. A very unusual antique piece!
