Original Seen Sketches in "Babar's Spanish Lessons" Unique
“Babar’s Spanish Lessons". New York: Random House, 1965. Signed, “For all the Grahams from Babar and Laurent Brunhoff”, with two original never-before-seen sketches from Laurent Brunhoff, one being a chick on the ear of an elephant and the other being an elephant waving. Hardcover, 12.5” x 9”. No dust jacket, front cover (slight wear on the cover), illustrated in vibrant colors, boldly signed with bold drawings, in overall fine condition.
Laurent de Brunhoff (b.1925) is an abstract painter and illustrator of stories of Babar the Elephant. He is the son of Cecile de Brunhoff, a French writer and artist who told her young son’s elephant stories to amuse them when they were young. The boys, Laurent and his brother, Mathieu, persuaded their mother to publish the stories and their father to illustrate them, and the first of the stories was released in 1931. From that time, Laurent de Brunhoff has carried on the tradition, writing and illustrating thirty more of the tales.
For six seasons, a cartoon version of the Babar stories was broadcast in 30 languages in more than 150 countries, which makes the series one of the most widely distributed animated shows in history.
