Rare Robert Morris Pay Document

Partially Printed Document Signed, "Robt Morris", 1p, 9.25" x 3.75", Philadelphia, April 6, 1786, a Bill of Exchange, No. 148, directing John Rucker in London to pay a sum of one hundred and fifty pounds sterling to William Bell within the next sixty days. Bills of Exchange were issued in quadruplicate, with this particular piece being the third. Endorsed by Bell at verso. Laminated in tinted plastic by previous collector, with a short printed description at lower right; recto and verso split into two separate pieces. We feel that the document could be removed with professional restoration. Document has expected wear, including toning and a few tiny areas of loss. Rare and boldy signed by Morris, whose signature measures 3" in length!

Robert Morris (1734-1806) was an English-born merchant and a Founding Father of the United States. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania legislature, the Second Continental Congress, and the United States Senate, and he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution. From 1781 to 1784, he served as the Superintendent of Finance of the United States, becoming known as the "Financier of the Revolution". Along with Alexander Hamilton and Albert Gallatin, he is widely regarded as one of the founders of the financial system of the United States.
