Guild of Women Binders Edition of "Sir Edward Burne-Jones", Beautifully Bound

A copy of "Sir Edward Burne-Jones: A Record and Review" bound by the Guild of Women-Binders. Authored by Malcolm Bell. London: George Bell & Sons, 1898. Twelvemo, xii, 151pp including an index. With 99 illustrated plates throughout. Watercolored end pages with floral gilt decorations. Gilt page edges. Brown and green leather-bound covers, intricately decorated with floral gilt embossing. Gilt title at the spine with five raised bands. Rubbing to the corners and spine. Light age toning. Very fine overall.

The Guild of Women Binders was a collective of female artisans who created a variety of fine bindings in the period from May 1898 to 1904. The Guild was founded by Frank Karslake (1864–1917), an antiquarian and second-hand bookseller with a shop in Charing Cross, London. Experienced binders such as Florence de Rheims, Ella Bailey, Gertrude Giles, and Ethel Slater had their works sold by Karslake, while the new entrants to the Guild received training in the art of bookbinding. The majority of bindings feature beautiful, elegant Art Nouveau patterns which were popular at the time.
