Description
1864 California Presidential Ticket for Lincoln and Johnson, Ft. Battle of Cherbourg
An 1864 Union election ticket promoting Abraham Lincoln and his running mate, Andrew Johnson. Measuring 3" x 7.25", California, ca. 1864. A presidential election ticket for Lincoln and Johnson which also features candidates for Presidential Electors and a member of Congress. On verso is an illustration of the Battle of Cherbourg between the USS Kearsarge and the CSS Alabama. A small tear at the top left has been repaired with archival tape. Moderate toning throughout with light soiling. Minor wear to the edges and corners. Overall very good.
The Battle of Cherbourg was fought between the USS Kearsarge and the CSS Alabama on June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France. The Alabama ultimately was sunk and the Confederate sailors suffered 40 casualties (19 KIA or drowned and 21 wounded), with an additional 70 captured. In contrast, the Kearsarge had only one killed and two wounded. The news of Alabama's defeat was met with great celebration in the North, as many Union merchant vessels had previously been destroyed or captured by her in the past.
