Item Details
Description
Suzanne Pascal - "Head of a Woman" Carved, chiseled and Polished Green Slag Glass. Inscribed Signature lower right. Sculpture Height: 17" Fitted on artist custom created metal based designed for this sculpture. Sculpture and Base Height 29 1/2". (The artist recently passed away and her glass is expensive even NON sculpted) Glass resists carving and cannot be sculpted with a hammer and chisel because it will shatter. Through sheer determination and luck, Pascal who sculpts glass as Michelangelo did marble. She may be the world's only glass chiseler, if not she was surely the "best". Her works sell between $10,000 and $ 300,000 and can be found in museums (Corcoran in Washington ) and have been present in the homes of Presidents, Armand Hammer, Prince and Princess, etc. Pascal was born nearly deaf and communicated with her mother via drawings. At age 11 she was living in Italy to study with a local sculptor and showed great promise in stone. At 17 she regained hearing in one ear. In her late thirties she experimented with glass from Italy, Mexico and the US trying to sculpt, yet none worked. In 1961 a friend told her about the Pennsylvania Wire and Glass Factory in Dunbar, PA. The factory had gone bankrupt and its last batch of glass with there in there in the furnace which was twice the size of her home. She took to it with a chisel and lo and behold it didn't splinter. Somehow over years in the uneated plants had tempered the glass. She mortgaged her house to buy all the glass and lived nearby for two years sculpting for the likes of Hammer and The Rockefellers, Paul Newman. One of her sculptures graces the Vatican. Princess Di received a sculpture. She continued working with this glass for the next 3 decades, moving it to her homein Los Angeles via the help of a 75,000 pound crane. Her most expensive glass sculpture sold for about $3,000,000. A 26" x 26" x 7" once sold for $180,000. I believe she is still alive in her 100's. One can find very small pieces on occassion, yet a sculpture of this size is quite scarce to come on the market. It is fascinating piece as the light reflected and seen thru it via sunlight or overhead lighting is so dramatic and contstantly changing. Have something "nobody" else has ! Beautiful colors.
