Item Details
Description
NO RESERVE Corbett (Jim) Man-Eaters of Kumaon, second impression, with long autograph inscription from John Philip Lavallin Puxley and a diary extract, fellow explorer and friend of the author, accounting their time in India, on front free endpapers, half-title and verso, with his bookplate to half-title, original cloth, spine sunned, ends creased, 8vo, 1950.

⁂ Colonel Edward James Corbett (1875 -1955) was an Indian-born British hunter, tracker, naturalist, and author who hunted a number of man-eating tigers and leopards in the Indian subcontinent. The hand-written account remembers how he was "send with two other officers to meet Colonel Corbett to go out with him into the jungle before I had been in India a week. He showed us that if one had no rations it was not necessary to starve. If we dug where he showed us up we'd find some root rather like a potato which one could eat..." His diary extract on the following page accounts tracking leopards and tigers in the hills, where Corbett could "tell from pug marks the sex and age of the animal and how long ago it had passed. He said he could call a tiger to come to him but would not do so as he was responsible for our safety...". A fascinating account of tiger-hunting in India.
