Description: Volume III, Number IX, Number 33. 20 pp. 20pp. Illustrated with 4 woodcuts, one depicting the escape of a fugitive slave. Approximately 4¼x2¾". Without outer wrappers, probably as issued, as publication information is printed at the bottom of the front cover.Single issue of a short-lived periodical published from 1836 to 1839; only 38 issues appeared of this first anti-slavery magazine written for American children. The small magazine included poetry and prose intended to infuse children with Abolitionist sentiments. This issue, mainly telling the story of a slave's escape from bondage with the help of sympathetic whites, also excoriates a New York Presbyterian minister who held a slave woman he had separated from her child; and praises the Quakers who had freed all their slaves without asking for "compensation."
