Description

Pre-Columbian, Moche, North Coast Peru, ca. 100 to 800 CE. A striking mask ornament made from gilt copper sheets and inlaid with shells, with dangling disc ornaments, large ear flares, and a necklace. This impressive piece may have been used as a funerary mask; leaders in ancient Peruvian societies were buried with masks to indicate identity. The necklace spheres are in the form of owl heads- these nocturnal hunters symbolized supernatural forces and an anthropomorphic owl appears in Moche art, serving as a principal god and warrior associated with night and death. This impassive face has an intensity due to the shell and stone eyes set above the copper surface. Staring eyes imply all seeing power; the visage watchful and protective for eternity. Size of mask: 7" L x 6" W (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm); case: 12" L x 10" W x 14" H (30.5 cm x 25.4 cm x 35.6 cm); gold quality: 16.3% to 39.5%; & 75.21% on lower owl spheres
