FH says the North Star was one of the top two mines in Grass Valley/Nevada City. The North Star mine was first discovered by two Frenchmen in 1851 and ultimately became one of the three largest producers of gold in Grass Valley, California and operated continuously for over 70 years, with the exception during the 10 years, 1875-1884. It was run first by the original locators and later by the North Star Quartz, the North Star Gold Mining Co., and the North Star Mining Co.
