Description
**Originally Listed At $1200**
Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely iron bowl featuring the bust of baby Hercules holding 2 snakes in high relief in the central tondo surrounded by an intricate, floral border. The relief depicts the moment when the goddess Juno - angry at Hercules for being the product of Jupiter's affair with Alcmene - sent 2 snakes to kill him in his cradle. Hercules, however, was able to strangle both serpents and survive. This example is based on a silver bowl that was discovered as part of the Hildesheim Treasure in 1868 and is now in the Altes Museum in Berlin. A suspension hole behind the child's head allows for easy display. Size: 8" Diameter x 1.75" H (20.3 cm x 4.4 cm)
Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982
