Description
**Originally Listed At $800**

United States, Egyptian Revival textile, ca. 1920s. A large Egyptian Revival quilted applique tapestry skillfully made from fabrics of a pleasing color palette - hues of beige, grey, russet red, aqua, black, and white hues applied to a natural linen ground. The iconography of this impressive piece of wall art features Toth scribing the words of the pharaoh who sits before him with a sphinx below. The pharaoh is sheltered in a structure supported by columns that are topped by lotus flower capitols; the canopy above features a sun disk between Hathor cow horns, Isis wings, and a pair of royal uraeus (cobras) with an additional eight uraei (uraeuses) on top. Size (sight view): 66.875" L x 33.4" W (169.9 cm x 84.8 cm) Size (frame): 67.75" L x 34.25" W (172.1 cm x 87 cm)

The Egyptian Revival movement as well as the Gothic and Classical Revival styles were enjoyed throughout the 19th century and continued through the first decades of the 20th century in American decorative arts. Egyptian motifs such as the sphinx, obelisks, pharaohs, pyramids, and various Egyptian deities as well as Egyptian plant forms were viewed as attractive, exotic alternatives to traditional themes and designs. This Egyptian Revival was inspired by Napoleon's Egyptian campaign of 1798-1799 when Napoleon invited an entourage of artists and scientists to accompany him and document their discoveries. The result was a landmark publication titled "Le Description de l' Egypte" (The Description of Egypt), published in 1809, which contained large folio prints of Egyptian sites and antiquities. This was followed by a second edition issued in 1830. What's more, the translation of the Rosetta Stone in 1822 ignited even more interest in Egyptian art and culture, and signs of the rising passion for all things Egyptian arose in both Europe and America. Furthermore, Egyptomania was also inspired when King Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered in 1922, fueling the visual language of Art Deco well into the 1930s.

#179153
Condition
Expected age wear with some fading, a few stains, and a minute tear to Toth's advanced leg. Nevertheless, the imagery is still strong. Mounted in a custom red metal frame with suspension wire on verso. We would recommend replacing with new wire.
