Description
This great piece of railroad history is an American Railway Express Agency wax seal. This seal was used in the small Oregon city outside of Portland, North Plains. Handle is solid wood with brass head. Stands approx. 4" tall. Included is a small wax stamp. American Express was one of four principal package express delivery services by 1900, the US Postal Service expanded their delivery to parcels by 1913. By 1918 American Railway Express Agency was formed which merged these four principal delivery services, American Express having the largest share of 40%.
