Wallace Weir Fahnestock (1877 - 1962) Oil on Canvasboard, Signed Lower Right, Measures ( 11.5 x 15.5 inches ) w/frame ( 14 x 18 inches ) Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Wallace Fahnestock became a landscape painter primarily in the East where his primary studio and home was in Dorset, Vermont on Lower Hollow Road. He was a founding member of the Southern Vermont Arts Center, and many of his paintings depicted rural scenes of his region. He made an occasional trip to the western United States. In New York as a young man, he was a student in New York City of William Merritt Chase, Frank DuMond, and Arthur Dow. Later he was elected to membership of the Salmagundi Club, which held exhibitions for its members. He also painted in Boston, and he traveled West and painted Southwest landscapes including the Grand Canyon and Indian figures.
