Folio (420 x 320 mm). 2 lithographed plates by Bufford, after drawings by I. Sprague. Original printed wrappers, title and imprint on upper cover, some foxing to plates. Provenance: George B. Emerson, Esq (1797-1891, pioneer of women's education, authorial presentation). PRESENTATION COPY FOR GEORGE B. EMERSON OF THE RARE PRELIMINARY PUBLICATION OF SCENERY OF THE WHITE MOUNTAINS. Published in 1847, this small work contains two lithographs included in Oakes's famous Scenery of the White Mountains. The rear cover contains Oakes's solicitation of subscriptions for continuation of the series of plates, to a total of 15, and for The Book of the White Mountains, to be published 'in the early spring of 1848.' Emerson was the cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson and the founder of the Emerson School for Girls in 1823. His 1846 report on the flora of Massachusetts relied heavily on the botanical work of Oakes, and that of Asa Gray. Bent, p 1. Not in Howes. Lot to be sold without reserve.
