Daredevil's debut marks the last great character launch of Marvel's foundational creative explosion (1961-1964), and one of the most significant character introductions of the Silver Age. Bill Everett's artwork, with Kirby input and Ditko assistance, is intriguingly out-of-step with the other Marvel mags of the day, harkening to the gloomy atmospherics of Everett's Atlas-era horror and crime stories. Even the cut-and-paste cover design invokes the try-anything, beat-the-deadline aesthetics of the pre-Code years. Several key elements of the character's mythos are introduced here (grim urban setting, Noir-ish visuals, emphasis on street-level crimefighting), only to be largely forgotten until Frank Miller revitalized the book starting with issue #158.
