Description
SWINNERTON, JIMMY (JAMES GUILFORD). 1875-1974. Original 3 panel partial comic strip, watercolor on card, 'Canyon Kiddies,' 370 x 305 mm, signed and inscribed to Delmer Daves at lower edge of bottom two panels: 'To Del. from Swinnerton,' with penciled printer's notations on margins, a bit soiled and browned, chipping to edges. Swinnerton was recruited directly out of the San Francisco School of Design by Hearst's San Francisco Examiner while still a teenager. He moved to New York to produce cartoons for another Hearst paper, but in 1906 he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and William Randolph Hearst personally arranged for him to relocate to the Southwest, where he recovered. While living in Arizona, he created the 'Canyon Kiddies' series for Good Housekeeping, which he produced between 1921 and 1944. Having trained as a landscape painter, he also produced painted backdrops for Warner Brothers motion pictures. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
