This Antique Wedgwood Ivanhoe Flow Blue 10” Dinner Plate - Wambergurg and Shepard – Victorian Era is a large rimmed dinner plate measures about 10 inches across. It features a detailed scene of the Wambergurg and Shepard – talking .The color is Blue Transgerware (Flo Blue). No chips, stains, major use marks, or flea bites. Excellent condition. A little history: This lovely and detailed piece was made by Wedgwood and is called Ivanhoe. This pattern was designed by Wedgwood's art director, Thomas Allen in the late 1800's. It was taken to the Paris Exhibition of 1878 and was a very popular pattern. It is based on the characters from Sir Walter Scott's novel of the same name. The Victorians enjoyed a very romantic and idealized view of the medieval period that this pattern so beautifully portrays.
These dishes are called transferware. The process to make it is interesting, and variations of this method are still used today. First, a design was engraved onto a copper sheet or plate. Colored pigment was applied to the metal. Next, a tissue paper like material was pressed onto the sheet and the colored pigment was transferred to the paper. The paper was then placed onto the unglazed china. The paper was either soaked off or burned off at a low temperature leaving the detailed design on the china. Next the piece was covered in a clear glaze and kiln fired, resulting in the beautiful items that we have today!
Wedgwood created the Ivanhoe pattern in more than one color choice. Probably the most well know is flo-blue or flow ware. It is a cobalt blue on white. What makes it distinct is that the blue pigment, whether by design or accident, was allowed to soak into the paper and it 'flowed' creating softer, slightly blurry lines.
The markings on the back give us a clue to the age of the piece. During this time, Wedgwood used a three letter code impressed into the backs of the items to date their pieces. If the word 'England' is also impressed, then it was made after 1891. So this was made before 1891 but the 3 letters are not clear enough to give the exact year.
