Pesach, Gouache and Pastel on Paper by Bernard Gussow (American, 1881 -1957), born in Russian Empire.
Signed, dated at the bottom left
Sight 23x19, Frame 34x30 inches.
Bernard Gussow studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York. In 1902, Gussow and Jacob Epstein published their artworks in a book The Spirit of the Ghetto: Studies of the Jewish Quarter in New York. During his stay in Paris he shared a studio with fellow artists Jacob Epstein, James Bolivar Manson and Charles Polowetski. In 1913, he exhibited at the landmark Armory Show Movement and Figures. Between 1917 and 1939, Gussow also exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists and at Salons of America, The Society of Independent Artists, Luxembourg Museum in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the New York World Fair.
In 1930s, Gussow joined WPA, creating a post office mural (Recreation Hours) in East Rochester, NY, as well as over 25 watercolors to the Index of American Design in 1936 and 1942.
From 1912, Bernard Gussow taught at the Newark, NJ School of Fine and Industrial Art.
His works are in permanent collections of the Whitney Museum, Barnes Foundation, LACMA, the Newark Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art.
