Description
Modelled on EDGAR BRANDT (France, 1880-1960).
Floor lamp "Tentation".
Bronze shaft and lampshade in pâte de verre.
Measurements: 162.5 cm (total height); 43 cm (lampshade diameter).
Floor lamp with the shaft in the shape of a snake, with a perfectly detailed body showing the animal's scales, as well as an open mouth with a forked tongue. Brandt christened this model (commissioned by Daum in 1925) "The Temptation", as a nod to the biblical passage of original sin.
A French forger, Edgar Brandt was one of the most important iron craftsmen of the French Art Deco period, making an international breakthrough and extending his fame worldwide. He made trellises and lamps for numerous private homes and hotels, and also received public commissions, such as the monument to the First World War. Brandt exhibited at the annual Salons, where he presented a wide variety of non-architectural metal objects, including grilles, radiator covers, lamps and consoles. The 1925 Exhibition provided Brandt with numerous opportunities to showcase his work, starting with the imposing entrance to the Exhibition, the Gate of Honour. He always had a great facility for combining materials: generally wrought iron and bronze, but also gilded copper and, later, steel, aluminium or the "Studal" alloy. Raymond Subes was a follower of his.
