Description
An original hand painting on celluloid of cartoon chickens trotting around a wagon wheel with their chicks, signed in ink by Leon Schlesinger and inscribed: "This is an original painting I used in:- 'Looney Tunes' and 'Merrie Melodies.'"
The cell is mounted on a painted background and framed.
Schlesinger, a distant relative of the Warner Brothers, founded Leon Schlesinger Productions. He received a contract with Warner Brothers to produce their Looney Tunes series, and signed animators Hugh Harman and Rudy Ising to create cartoons for the series. Later, he pitched a sister series called Merry Melodies. In 1944, Warner Brothers acquired the studio, which became Warner Bros. Cartoons. Schlesinger died on Christmas Day in 1949.
