Description
1870 CIVIL WAR Confederate Capture Prison Pen and Escape Andersonville Glazier

“The Capture, the Prison Pen, and the Escape” is a post-Civil War account written by Union soldier Lt. Willard Worcester Glazier, who served with the 2nd New York, “Harris Cavalry” Regiment during the War. Within, he provides a detailed account of the inhumane treatment of prisoners during the American Civil War, focusing on the conditions in Southern prisons. The book describes the experiences of prisoners at various locations, including Richmond, Danville, Macon, Savannah, Charleston, Columbia, Belle Isle, Millin, Salisbury, and Andersonville. It also covers the authors personal experiences of capture, escape, recapture, and escaping again.

The book was written to shed light on the appalling conditions in the prisons and the atrocities committed by the captors. Glazier describes the significant number of prisoners who died due to the inhumane treatment they received. This book also includes Glaziers diary and journal entries, which were written during his time as a prisoner.

This edition contains an appendix, primarily written by Robert J. Fisher, which lists the names, ranks, regiments, and post-office addresses of prisoners. In addition, it features 17 illustrations to provide further context and insight into the experiences of the prisoners during that time.
