Description
1865 1ed Confederate Rebel Prison TORTURE Andersonville Civil War Robert Kellogg
Sgt. Maj. Robert H. Kelloggs detailed account, “Life and Death in Rebel Prisons” describes the horrific conditions and suffering endured by Union soldiers held as prisoners of war in Confederate prisons, particularly in Andersonville, Georgia, and Florence, South Carolina. The book describes the prisoners lack of clothing, inadequate food, and extreme physical and emotional suffering, which led many to view death as a welcome relief. Through this work, Kellogg aimed to shed light on the cruel treatment of Union soldiers by Confederate authorities and to provide the public with a better understanding of the hardships faced by prisoners of war. The book also includes illustrations and plans of the prisons, which enhance the narrative and offer a visual representation of the prisoners experiences.
According to Nevins,
“A sergeants journal of captivity, reworked by the editor; very bitter over deliberate cruelty to prisoners, but also gives facts tending to show the opposite.”
