Description
Large hand drawn poster in ink and red watercolor, with a Civil War battle scene, General Ulysses S. Grant in the midst of the fight on horseback, and the words: "Face the Other Way Boys" in red across the image. The entire quote, "Face the other way boys, we're going back," is attributed to Gen Grant during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House (Virginia) in 1864, when his troops, in the confusion, had begun to retreat. Likely drawn by the same hand as lot 129 in this auction, with similar somewhat folky style, similar size, and on the same kind of brown paper. Artist unknown, but likely from Virginia. Contemporary frame. Frame, approx. 46" x 34". Sight, approx. 37 1/4" x 25".
