Description
19th C. oil on canvas copy of a self-portrait by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640.) Likely by Sala Bosworth (Ohio, 1809-1887.) Sala Bosworth attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1827 and 1828. The Ohio artist was an itinerate portrait painter in the towns along the Ohio River. He also painted murals and worked as an illustrator. His drawings, based on conversations with Ohio pioneers, are the basis for many of the illustrations in "Hildreth's Pioneer History". The loss of his eyesight in 1833 put an end to his career as a painter. He went on to work as a merchant in Marietta, Ohio. In 1861, President Lincoln appointed him Marietta postmaster, an office he filled until 1870. Bosworth's personal correspondence reveals his interest in the Abolitionist movement. Oil on canvas. Canvas relined. 19th C. gilt gesso frame, approx. 36" x 40". Sight, approx. 24" x 28 1/4". Provenance: Descended in the Bosworth / Dawes family.
