Description
Bronze Benin African Rooster Bell Sculpture. It has a rooster looking down on top. It is cast bronze and a brownish color with some golden-bronze coming through and green from wear of time. The bell still works and is attached and has a nice sound. The sides have circular designs on the side and the bell is a square shape. The sides have geometric and curved designs in the side, as well as a face on each side. It is believed to be a Benin ceremonial bell from Nigeria. It was likely a ceremonial messenger bell used to call people to meetings. In African culture, roosters are said to symbolize fertility and can be the symbol of different clans or cults. Sometimes Roosters are killed and used as sacrifices during initiation ceremonies for various tribes. The bell measures about 6 in. long by 4 5/8 in. wide by 13 3/4 in. tall.
