Tony Gulbrandsen (First Nations / Canadian, Tsimshian, b. 1962). "Raven" carved cedar wood mask, ca. late 20th to 21st century. Signature, title, and artist's monogram on interior. An attractive cedar wood mask hand-carved by Tsimshian artist Tony Gulbrandsen to depict a raven, painted in hues of red, green, and black and crowned by applied strips of cedar bark. The stylized bird displays geometric decoration that highlights his Northwest Coast aesthetic. Pacific Northwest clan leaders hold potlatch ceremonies to renew their social status through a costly feast and gift exchange. Traditionally, the host would accumulate food, clothing, and trade goods, such as marine shells and copper, and commission specialized artists to create dance masks to further display this wealth. The raven is also considered a hero to the Tsimshian. In one story, the raven stole the sun and then released it on the Nass River to illuminate what had been a totally dark world. Size: 9.8" W x 11" H (24.9 cm x 27.9 cm)
