North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A large basket hand-woven with thin fronds from the hala tree with a matching lid - the fibers are tightly knotted and form an open weave, ideal for storing dried fish. These fronds are known as lauhala or "lau hala" and when woven together they are referred to as "ulana lau hala." The leaves are water resistant and durable, which makes them ideal for many different items such as sails, mats, and baskets like this example. The lauhlala fronds must have been cut into thinner strips to achieve this weave. Baskets were often twined around calabash gourds or wood bowls to protect or decorate the exteriors. Size: 14" Diameter x 8" H (35.6 cm x 20.3 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii collection, acquired 2000 to 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
