Description
Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist", a terra cotta maquette, signed on integral plinth, with two impressed oval seals: stamped, right base: "PROPRIETE / CARPEAUX", lettering around eagle image; oval studio stamp, left base: "DEPOT / 71 RUE BOILEAU / AUTEUIL PARIS", Roughly 14 3/4" x 7" x 7 1/2". Per the Met: "According to legend, in 1008 the Virgin Mary encircled the city of Valenciennes with a protective cord, thus saving the citizens from the plague. Carpeaux sketched this group upon his return to Paris from his native Valenciennes, having attended the consecration of the church dedicated to the Virgin's miraculous intervention.
