PROVENANCE: From the estate of Robert O. Muller. Wonderful vintage print, never displayed. RARE.
ZESHIN SHIBATA (1807-1891) was born in Tokyo (then Edo), the son of a sculptor. He began his career as apprentice to a lacquer craftsman, and later studied painting. In 1890 he became a court painter. His origins as a lacquerer are reflected in his prints by a frequent use of urushi (Japanese lacquer). Zeshin was celebrated as an artist and craftsman in his lifetime and was appointed to represent Japan at the World Exhibition in Paris, and other international exhibitions in Philadelphia and Vienna.
