Description
Nellie Lott Hoffman (1868-1944) American, Oil on Canvas. Pasadena, 1935, view of the San Gabriel Mountains. Signed with initials and dated '35. Nellie Hoffman is known for Landscape painting. Eleanora Lott (Nellie) was born in Sycamore, Illinois, a small town about 30 miles west of Chicago, on the fourth of July, and was raised on her parents' farm. She met her future husband at a dance in Sycamore where Chicagoan George Delos Hoffman was playing the flute with a visiting band. He saw Miss Lott across a crowded floor and was instantly smitten by her charm. They were married on September 20th, 1887, in a wedding described by the DeKalb Chronicle as "A Brilliant Event" with "the church in gala attire…the altar…one mass of blooming plants…and the bride dressed in shimmering white satin and veil of white tulle, carrying a bouquet of Night Blooming Sereus tied with white satin ribbons." The mother of the groom attended the wedding, but she did not approve of the match and disinherited him. Overall Size: 21 1/2 x 17 1/2 in. Sight Size: 17 1/2 x 13 1/4 in. #3660
