East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wood panel of a rectangular form and intricately carved with an openwork scene of a mythical bird known as a fenghuang (phoenix), amongst meandering vines and floral motifs. The phoenix is associated with emperors and will only appear in times of prosperity and peace, second only in the supernatural creatures of the Chinese pantheon to the dragon." This panel may have been an architectural element to decorate and usher in luck and fortune! Size: 30" L x 1.5" W x 11.5" H (76.2 cm x 3.8 cm x 29.2 cm)
