Description
"The Sun is My Undoing" by Marguerite Steen, published by The Viking Press, New York, First Edition, 16th Printing September 1942 [1st published in August 1941].
Hard boards, original red cloth with blind lettering on front board and gold lettering on spine [a little wear: see photos]; 5.3/4" x 8.1/2"; "Dorothy B. Philbrook" is ink written on the front endpaper, 1176 pages, very good condition.
This is a novel on the scale of 'Gone with the Wind' set in the 18C and starting in Bristol, involving the slave-trade and moving out to the West-Indies & Cuba, and Spain, and back again. It is the story of the Floods, a great shipping family.
"Set in the 1700' and written almost 100 years ago, the archaic language takes some getting into, but it was better written than many apparently literary offerings today. The story is engrossing, the paths of the characters taking unexpected twists and turns. Covering four generations, it holds the interest in a driving plot of greed, ambition, and social divide, leading to a surprise ending. There were no weak ruses in this book. The actions of the individuals rested on the mores of the day. This magnificent story could put a new classification into the seven basic plots as the trials and ups and downs of the characters never follows the anticipated straight path." [a review]
