Description
[Potter (Beatrix)] [Two mice in a coconut],shaped chromolithograph Christmas Card, text on verso reads "With best wishes for a Bright and Happy Christmas", Hildesheimer & Faulkner no.185, contemporary ink inscription with some surface abrading, Designed in England, Printed in Germany, [c.1890]. Beatrix Potter's original design for this Christmas card depicted a mouse in a nest rather than a coconut. LB1782 and 1787 in the V&A are her original watercolour designs, the former depicting the mouse inside the nest, and the latter depicting the nest viewed from the outside.
***Rare variant, not in the V&A collection which has two cards of this design in the Linder Bequest: LB1788a has the serial number 205 and the message "A happy New Year to you."; LB1788b has no serial number and the message "A happy Christmas to you.".
