Item Details
Description
Included in this lot is vintage print of the Ed Irwin photograph of "Geronimo Chief of the Notorious Band of Arizona Apache Indians", 1897. Geronimo, Mescalero-Chiricahua Apache warrior leader, poses near a haystack at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He holds a pistol and wears a fringed shirt, ammunition belt, and beaded antelope horn headdress. Geronimo was a prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Ndendahe Apache people. From 1850 to 1886, Geronimo joined with members of three other Central Apache bands – the Tchihende, the Tsokanende (called Chiricahua by Americans) and the Nednhi – to carry out numerous raids, as well as fight against Mexican and U.S. military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. William Edward "Ed" Irwin (1871-1935) was a photographer active in Indian Territory, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, as well as other places in the American West. Around 1893, Ed Irwin learned photography from J. H. Hurl in Texas, and opened a photography studio in Chickasha, Indian Territory (later Oklahoma). Around 1895, he became partners with S. Jack Mankins (1871-1910), and they operated a photography studio, Irwin & Mankins, also known as the Blue Tent Gallery, in Chickasha until 1903, as well as studios in Duncan, Indian Territory, and Richmond, Texas. In 1903, Ed probably was a partner in the Irwin-Walk Studio in Lampasas, Texas. This wood framed vintage print is in fair to good overall condition, two tears are visible; one is located above Geronimo's right shoulder, the smaller one located horizontally from the left upper arm. No other obvious marring noted. The gun-metal grey coloured wood frame exhibits slight scuffing to frame edges, no other obvious marring noted. Visible image measures 5.5"W x 7.5"L, frame is 6.5"W x 8.5"L x .50"D
