Description
Technique: Steel engraving on Paper
Date: c. 1850
Description: Steel engraving by Johann Georg Nordheim, inscribed: "Meyer`s Conv. Lex. N°/8 Lord Brougham". Rare steel engraving of Lord Brougham. The young Brougham is looking to the side. His thick curls are parted and form a quiff above the forehead, making the sitter appear very youthful. The slight shading of the beautiful facial features and the finest lines, for example of the eyelashes, give this steel engraving an extremely lively effect. Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778 - 1868) was an English writer, scientist and distinguished lawyer. He belonged to the Whig party and campaigned for the abolition of slavery. As a lawyer, he became famous for his successful defence of the British Queen Caroline of Brunswick, from whom George IV tried to wrest the Queen's rights. Johann Georg Nordheim (Gehaus 1804 - 1853 Hildburghausen) was a German engraver.
